Priti Patel “caused legal storm” will “Ill-advised” tweet about migrant deaths

Home secretary Priti Patel has recently caused a legal storm with her “ill-advised” tweet about the death of 39 migrants while the trial was going on.

On 23rd October, the day of the anniversary of the tragedy, the Home secretary’s Twitter account posted:

“One year ago today, 39 people lost their lives in horrific circumstances at the hands of ruthless criminals. My thoughts remain with everyone who was affected by that day, particularly the loved ones of the people who so tragically died.”

Commenting on this post, one Twitter user wrote: “Dear home secretary. There is an active criminal trial ongoing. Your comments are ill-advised and in case you are not au fait with such things, in contempt of court.”

The post was retweeted and liked hundred of times before it came to the attention of a defense lawyer and the trial was halted.

Many have complained about the description of “ruthless criminals”. The tweet has now been deleted.
