Visas and residence permits for the United Kingdom

If you’re going to the UK to study or live in the UK, it’s important to know if you’ll have to apply for entry to the UK visa. It depends upon where you travel or your destination.

There are many routes to securing a Residence permit, but applicants can expect to be resident in the UK for at least 2 years before they become eligible to apply for a residence permit.

Applications for a residence permit must be done from inside the UK.

How do I get a visa and work permit in the UK

First, if your visa is needed in the United Kingdom, it depends upon where you are in the United Kingdom.

You do not need a visa or work permit to work within the UK. However, Britain’s exit from the EU is set to last until 2020 and for now the rules will be unchanged.

It is recommended that if you want to be settled with the UK immediately it can be done using the EU Settlement Scheme.

How can I obtain permanent residency in the UK?

Permanent residency is a condition that can be maintained for an indefinite period of stay.

This visa permits a person to stay and work in the UK in an indefinite manner but does not require any restriction to work in the UK.

Besides healthcare and /or pensions, it also allows you access to social benefits such as employment benefits.

If you are a Commonwealth citizen and a qualifying Member of the EU, you are eligible in certain circumstances. Permanent residence is a lengthy procedure.

This right cannot be revoked when permanent citizens spend more than 2 years continuously outside the country.

Visas to study in the United Kingdom

The UK’s high educational facilities and international reputation make it a popular destination for international students to continue their education.

Before a foreign citizen enters the UK, they need an official visa to study within Britain. UK Student Visas previously known as Tier Four Visas permit students to live in Britain full time while they study abroad or study elsewhere.

In order for a student to qualify, applicants must be willing to take part in the courses offered by a registered education institution in England.

Then, they must also demonstrate their English proficiency.

As well as this, applicants must also be able to prove that they:

    • Can provide the relevant tuition and living funds to accommodate their studies overseas.
    • Are 16 or over.
    • Have a licenced sponsor for a relevant UK study course at a school, college or university.

Who needs a UK residence permit?

If you are unable to get a UK visa, you may require a UK visa if you do not have a British passport or an international passport.

Generally speaking, some persons can travel to England from overseas without a visa and some require visiting in order to travel.

Any resident who wishes to stay in Britain longer than six months must obtain a residence permit.

It is necessary that you obtain a permanent resident’s permit to travel to the UK.

You can not stay in Britain permanently without completing the residency requirements of an English citizen.

      Types of UK Residence permits

An individual can receive residence through any of these visa routes:

      • Work Visas.
      • Business Visas.
      • Study Visas.
      • Visitor Visas.
      • Family Visas.
      • Settlement Visas.
      • Transit Visas.
      • Biometric Residence Permit (BRP)

In order to apply for permanent residency, you must first have spent a certain amount of time in the UK, which varies depending on your visa or personal immigration status:

      • Spouse or unmarried partner to UK citizen: 2 years.
      • Lawful stay on any basis: 10 years.
      • Unlawful stay: 14 years.
      • Tier 1 and Tier 2 work permit: 5 years.

Biometric Residence Permits and change of circumstances

Any changes to the biometric residence permits require you to contact the Home Office immediately.

Whether you live in a new or current location, you may report your changes without the requirement for a Biometric Residence permit through this online application.

This form may also be used to inform the Home Office of other changes to circumstances.

If you have changed your name, nationality, facial expression, and birth dates, then you should apply for an updated biometric residence permit immediately, if necessary.

What if a BRP is lost, stolen or damaged?

If you are unable to use a Biometric Residence Permit, you must immediately contact the Card Management Department for any such incident.

The home office is notified within a working day of your complaint. Failure to report lost or stolen BRPs can cause an extra £500.

Upon returning from the United Kingdom you must report the BRP to the BRP Office to receive a replacement BRP if it is valid for more than three months.

If your BRP has not been valid for 3 months you won’t have to get replacements.
